Holy Week is the most popular fest in Jumilla town. Easter is celebrated in Jumilla for more than six hundred years. It was declarated a Fiesta of National Tourist Interest in2000. The heritage of images is very rich, including a sculpture of Salzillo called 'El Cristo Amarrado a la Columna', made in the 18th century.
Palm Sunday is the first day in which there is a procession around the main streets of Jumilla. People take white palms or olive branches and follow Jesus Christ on the mule. This is the beginning of the most popular fest in Jumilla. On Holy Tuesday, the procession of 'Los penitentes' goes around the Church of El Salvador at midnight. On Holy Wednesday, the Arrest of Christ is performed at 5pm in the 'Plaza de Arriba'. Moreover, there is a procession with many thrones and nazarenes at night. On Maundy Thrusday afternoon women wear black dresses, Mantilla-ed widows and Ornamental combs and men dress up with robes. At about 6 pm they begin to walk along the streets together with the music band and they visit churches. Inside they say the rosary. People are very moved since they feel fervour with the parade. It's typical that people meet friends on this day of devotion. On Maundy Thrusday night, the procession of 'La Amargura' takes place, anticipating the top of the week. Good Friday is one of the most important days, in which there are two acts. The first one is the procession of 'El Calvario', that includes a lot of thrones followed by their nazarenes. The second is 'El entierro de Cristo', that begins at night. The most particular thing in this procession is that all thrones are carried on bearers' shoulders. Besides, many candles shine in the middle of the night.
On Holy Saturday, more than 15.000 drummers go together to the procession 'La Redención'. The last day is Easter Sunday. This day is celebrated with the procession of 'Jesús Resucitado', and this is the end of a week full of colour, senses and fervour. The procession finishes with the 'caramelada', where many people and nazarenes throw millions of sweet between them and enjoy the moment. Other interesting event during Easter, is when the music band of Roman centurions parade trying to form a spiral, it is called "El Caracol". This symbolic form shows Jesus Chirst's Resurrection.
